How to submit Sitemap to Google Search Console?

Google search console helps you get found on internet through indexing your webpages into Google's directory. But can it do that until it knows about how many pages you have and which pages you want to index?

There's no certainty. So how can you make it more sure that it knows about your webpages?

Well, the method is submitting sitemap to Google Search Console.

Before we get to know how can we submit a sitemap to google webmasters, let's talk a little bit about what a sitemap actually is.

What is a Sitemap?

A sitemap is a list of links of pages which are willed to be crawled by search engine bots and users. It also has information about certain meta data that a bot uses to find details about content and relationship between contents on a website.

Are sitemaps always xml sitemaps?

No way! A simple sitemap can be generated very easily by creating a list of pages that you want to index and make a HTML pages for it. These kinds of sitemaps are called HTML sitemaps. You just have to create a list of links and this is how to create a HTML sitemap for blog or website.

You can also create own sitemap easily by making a text file in notepad by writing links of all webpages that you want to index, one in a row, and save it as a *.txt file.

But basically, if you are a normal blogger and are using either Wordpress or Blogspot for your blog or website, you don't need to create own sitemap. These two blogging platforms have inbuilt sitemaps at following address-
  • Wordpress Sitemap URL - http://mysite.com/feed
  • Blogger Sitemap URL - http://blog.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default

Submitting Sitemap to Google Search Console -

Step by step instructions for adding sitemap to google search console :

  1. Login to your Google Search Console
  2. Add your website to Google search console.
  3. Go to the dashboard and you'll find a widget showing number of sitemaps submitted. Is there a 0 sitting quietly?
  4. Click on the sitemap option.
  5. In the right side, you'll see an option to add sitemap url with a "Test Sitemap" and "Submit" button.
  6. Enter the url of your sitemap there.
  7. Click on Submit.

Congrats, your sitemap has been submitted successfully.
